Neoprene Accessories - Surf Cap
A surf cap is one of the most important accessories to get through the Dutch winter comfortably. There are basically two types of surf caps, the traditional hood and the beanie. The hood covers your entire head except your mouth, nose and eyes. It is the warmest option and usually ranges from 1.5 mm to 3 mm in thickness. You can also choose a hood with an extra long neck flap, which prevents water from hitting your upper body directly and keeps you super warm during your session. The beanie is a neoprene hat that you wear on your head and over your ears. A beanie is more comfortable than a hood but is a bit colder. Unsure whether to choose a beanie or a hood? Surf caps at Kitemana
A neoprene surf cap keeps you nice and warm in winter. You lose most of your body heat through your head while surfing, so wearing a cap or headband during winter sessions makes a big difference. A beanie or headband is great when it is not extremely cold, giving you more freedom of movement in your neck. When it really gets cold, a hood with a neck flap is the better choice. It keeps you super warm during winter storms. So no excuses not to get on the water.
Most frequently asked questions about surf caps:
Which surf cap suits which weather conditions?
Which surf cap suits the weather conditions depends a lot on the season and the situation on the water. In summer or on warm and sunny days the focus is on cooling and sun protection. A light surf cap with ventilation holes or a cap made of breathable fabric is ideal. These caps protect your head from sunburn and help prevent overheating during long sessions. Ventilation holes provide airflow and an adjustable chin strap keeps the cap in place even in strong wind or after a crash.
As temperatures drop and you get on the water in autumn or winter the focus shifts to keeping warm. You want a cap that keeps your head warm and lets as little water in as possible. Neoprene caps are perfect for this. The thicker the neoprene the better the insulation. A good winter cap fits snugly around your head, often covering part of your ears and neck, and prevents cold wind or water from getting in. This makes a big difference in comfort and endurance on windy or rainy days. Thanks to the face opening your visibility and breathing remain normal. Your hearing is slightly dampened but you can still hear your surroundings well.
Which surf cap size do I need?
The size of your surf cap is determined by measuring the circumference of your head. Use a measuring tape around your head just above your ears and eyebrows, this is the widest point. Based on that circumference you choose the correct size according to the brand’s size chart. Most surf caps come in sizes like S, M, L and XL, but some models are one size and have an adjustable strap for a proper fit.
Are you between sizes or unsure? It is best to choose the smaller size, since a surf cap needs to fit snugly so it does not shift or blow off during your kitesurf session. Need help? Feel free to contact us. You can always visit our megastore in Noordwijk to try different models.
Why is it important to wear a surf cap?
Wearing a surf cap while kitesurfing is not an unnecessary luxury, it is a smart way to protect yourself against weather, wind and water. On sunny days a surf cap prevents your head from overheating and protects you from heatstroke. At the same time a cap helps shield your face and neck from UV radiation, which is extra strong on the water due to reflection.
On colder days a surf cap also gives you important protection. Wind and cold water can make you cool down rapidly and in the long run can even lead to surfer’s ear, a painful condition where bone growth occurs inside the ear due to too much exposure to wind and cold. A cap with proper coverage and insulation helps prevent this. In addition a surf cap provides a bit of protection during crashes or unexpected situations, for example against the impact of your board or bar.
