Surfwax at Kitemana

Without surf wax (or a deck pad), it’s nearly impossible to stay on your surfboard, you’ll just slide off. Surf wax ensures you have the right amount of grip under your feet. However, for kitesurfing, a deck pad might be a better choice since the pressure on your feet is much higher than when regular surfing, which can cause wax to wear off quickly. That’s why many kitesurfers use deck pads on their wave boards. These pads provide excellent grip and only need to be applied once. Deck pads come in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and brands. Check out all our deck pads here.

Which type of wax do I need?

The type of wax you need depends on the water temperature where you’re surfing. Always check this before traveling, some locations have surprisingly cold water, like Cape Town in South Africa. In the Netherlands, wax for cold to cool water is usually the best choice. During summer, the water can reach up to 20°C, but that’s rare. Always match your wax to the water temperature for the best grip and performance.

Are there alternatives to surf wax?

Yes, there are several alternatives depending on your preference and board type. The most popular option is a grip pad (also called a deck pad). These rubber pads stick directly to your board and provide great traction without waxing. They’re durable, easy to clean, and ideal for kiters who ride frequently.

There are also eco-friendly wax alternatives made from natural ingredients such as beeswax or plant-based oils, which are less harmful to the environment while still offering solid grip. Some riders even use anti-slip sprays or coatings that create a thin textured surface on the deck. Still, many surfers prefer traditional wax for its natural feel and direct board control. It all comes down to personal preference for grip, maintenance, and board feel.

Why do I need base coat?

A base coat is the first, sticky layer of wax applied to your surfboard before the top coat. It helps the wax adhere better and prevents it from sliding off during surfing or kitesurfing. Without a base coat, your wax won’t stick properly to the board, and you’ll lose grip faster, especially in warm water or after long sessions.

The base coat has a harder texture than regular wax and forms small bumps or ridges on the deck. On top of that, you apply a softer top coat for a comfortable grip underfoot. This combination makes your wax last longer and reduces the need to reapply frequently.
