Hydrofoils at Kitemana
At first glance, a hydrofoil may seem technical, but the principle is quite simple. In the section below, we explain exactly how a hydrofoil works and what to consider when choosing the right model. Factors such as mast length, wing surface area, and construction material all determine how stable, fast, or responsive your foil feels. Whether you’re just getting started or already comfortable flying, the right setup makes the difference between struggling with water starts and effortlessly gliding across the surface. Read on below to discover which hydrofoil best matches your level, board, and riding style — so you can hit the water with confidence and control.
How do I choose the right hydrofoil — size, shape, and mast length?
The right hydrofoil depends heavily on your level, weight, riding style, and the conditions you usually foil in. Beginners should start with a large front wing with plenty of surface area (900–1200 cm²). This provides earlier lift, more stability, and a smoother, more forgiving ride. Pair it with a shorter mast of 50–70 cm for easier control during touchdowns and to learn balancing.
If you’re already more advanced and can foil steadily, you can move to smaller wings with a higher aspect ratio (AR). These longer and narrower wings cut more efficiently through the water, offering higher speeds and greater responsiveness — ideal for advanced freeride, freestyle, or racing. A longer mast (80–105 cm) gives more height, more room for gusts or wind dips, and smoother performance in choppy water.
Wing shape also plays an important role. Rounded or curved wings feel more stable and turn smoothly, while straight, narrow wings respond faster and allow for higher speeds. Pay attention to the sweep (how far back the wingtips are angled): more sweep means more stability and forgiveness; less sweep means higher efficiency but more technical control. For freeride or surf, stability is key; for racing, efficiency is everything.
Can I combine hydrofoil parts from different brands?
Many brands now design their hydrofoils modularly, allowing you to mix and match masts, fuselages, and wings within the same system. This way, you can easily adapt your setup to the conditions, your level, or your preferred style — for example, a larger wing for light wind or a faster one for freeride or racing. However, not every brand uses the same mounting system. Common types include plate mounts, track mounts, or Tuttle boxes, and these are not always interchangeable. At Kitemana, we’re happy to help you check whether your parts fit together. Buying a foil and board from the same brand and season is usually a safe bet for perfect compatibility. We stock hydrofoils from top brands like Duotone, F-One, Cabrinha, North, Naish, Appletree, and Sabfoil — from easy-going freeride foils to high-performance racing models. Whether you’re making your first flights or chasing more speed and control, you’ll find your ideal foil setup at Kitemana.
What are the differences between an aluminum and a carbon foil mast?
The mast material makes a huge difference in how your foil feels on the water. Aluminum foils are strong, durable, and more affordable — perfect if you’re just starting out or want a setup that can handle a few knocks. They’re slightly heavier and less stiff than carbon but offer a smoother, more forgiving ride. Carbon foils, on the other hand, are designed for maximum performance — they’re ultra-light, ultra-stiff, and highly responsive, transmitting every movement instantly. Ideal if you’re looking for speed, precision, and top control. Carbon requires a bit more care during transport and maintenance but rewards you with a premium feel on the water. If you’re a beginner or recreational foiler, aluminum is often the best choice to build confidence. If you’re an experienced rider seeking smooth power, tight turns, and freestyle precision, a carbon mast will match your goals perfectly.
