When the water drops towards six degrees and the wind blows straight across it, you do not want to do things by halves. The Prolimit Mercury 6/4 Free-X Hooded 2027 Wetsuit is Prolimit's answer to a proper cold-water winter. 6/4mm NaturePrene2 around your body, a hood in thicker NaturePrene2 with Zodiac lining and a Free-X frontzip that gets you in and out quickly. While everyone else is scanning the beach for a spot out of the wind, you are simply on the water.

That hood is the difference between gritting your teeth for twenty minutes and having fun for two hours. Cold is mostly in your head, and in this case that is literally true. You lose a lot of heat around your head and neck, especially when they are wet and the wind is on them. The hood seals neatly around your face, keeps water out and takes away the windchill the moment you come up after a crash. The thicker neoprene on top does the insulating, while the Zodiac lining on the inside stays soft against your skin.

Under that outer layer sits the 4-layer build the Mercury is known for. A protective outer layer, stretchy NaturePrene2 for insulation and freedom of movement, the Thermal Rebound2 layer that bounces your own body heat back at you, and finally the quick drying Zodiac2 fleece. That fleece pulls water off your skin and releases it again fast, so even after a proper dunking you are not stuck with a cold wet layer against your body.

The seams are finished using the Fluid Taping Method: triple glued with water-based Aqua Alpha glue, blind stitched and sealed on the outside with a wide carbon neoprene tape. That keeps them stretchy and stops almost all water from getting through, exactly what you need in winter. The knees get the KED construction for protection and bending freedom, and at the bottom of the legs the drainholes and ankle straps make sure any water that does get in runs straight back out.
