Gaastra is for kitesurfers who value control and reliability. That is why Gaastra remains a go to for kitesurfers who simply want solid equipment.

Gaastra the History

Gaastra was founded in 1897, giving it a long history in water sports. What started as a sail loft grew into a brand fully focused on functional, high quality equipment. Over the years, one thing stayed central, progress. That drive for innovation is still the foundation of everything Gaastra develops.

From the 1980s onward, Gaastra played a major role in the windsurf world, and the brand grew into a leading name in the sport. With team riders like Robby Naish, Pete Cabrinha, and Pascal Maka, Gaastra helped shape important developments, both on competition days and in product development. This period laid the groundwork for Gaastra’s reputation for performance and reliability. Around this time, clothing production also started, which you can still find on the Gaastra webshop. Gaastra jackets, Gaastra coats, and other sailing related apparel.

In 2001, Gaastra also entered kitesurfing, as one of the first established water sports brands to do so. Since then, the brand has applied the same philosophy, develop gear that works in real conditions, for both beginners and experienced riders. With a refreshed logo, Gaastra stays true to its roots, while continuing to evolve within modern water sports. Quite a reputation!

Gaastra development

Since entering kitesurfing in 2001, Gaastra has developed its kitesurf products step by step. As a brand with a long background in water sports, Gaastra could build on existing knowledge of aerodynamics, material use, and sail construction. By continuously testing on the water and incorporating rider feedback, the kites have become more refined over the years, with improvements in control, stability, and ease of use.
Gaastra kite development is all about practical innovation. Think improvements in canopy materials, frame construction, and bridle tuning, all aimed at predictable handling and broad versatility. Instead of chasing quick trends, Gaastra focuses on proven solutions that perform well in different conditions and last a long time. The result is kites that suit a wide group of kitesurfers, from recreational freeriders to advanced wave riders.

Gaastra and collaboration with riders

A key part of product development is collaboration with experienced riders and designers. Through intensive testing and continuous fine tuning, Gaastra kites are refined in real world use, not only for performance but also for durability and comfort. This approach ensures Gaastra kitesurf products keep evolving, with a clear focus on reliability and control on the water.

Gaastra kites through the years

Gaastra has played a consistent role in water sports since the early days of kitesurfing. With a strong foundation in windsurfing, Gaastra brought its knowledge of sail design, materials, and aerodynamics into kitesurfing. In the early years, the focus was on solid, reliably built kites that could handle intensive use and offered strong value for money.

Around the 2000s, Gaastra made its name with C kite models like the Gaastra Matrix and Gaastra Vortex. These kites were known for their direct feel, robust construction, and steady character. They were popular in the early freestyle scene and appreciated by kitesurfers looking for control and durability, without complicated tuning.

As bow and hybrid designs became more common, Gaastra moved with the trend. In this phase, accessibility became increasingly important. Kites gained more depower, a wider wind range, and easier relaunch. Within this development, the Gaastra Spark was created, a model that fits perfectly within Gaastra’s philosophy. The Spark combines all round performance with ease of use and stability, making it suitable for a wide range of riders. To this day, the Spark represents what Gaastra stands for, solid kites with predictable handling, built for long sessions and a wide variety of conditions.

Gaastra kiteboards

Whether you ride in light wind, go for all round freeride sessions, or push it with big air and freestyle, Gaastra offers a clear range with a distinct character for each model. The Gaastra Blend sits in the light wind freeride segment. This kiteboard is made for kitesurfers who want to plane as early as possible and ride efficiently when the wind is light. The Blend is ideal for relaxed freeride sessions, and it also gives you enough confidence when you still want to jump or ride longer tacks in lighter conditions. It is an accessible choice for riders who often deal with marginal wind.

The Gaastra Watts is Gaastra’s all round freeride board. This model is designed for a broad group of kitesurfers and performs well in a wide range of conditions. Whether you are cruising, working on your jumps, or practising your first freestyle moves, the Watts feels at home everywhere. Thanks to its versatile character, it is a logical choice for riders who want one board for different sessions.

If your focus is on height, control, and progression, there is the Gaastra Pact. This board sits in the big air and freestyle performance range, and it is developed for riders who are actively working on powerful jumps and technical tricks. The Pact is focused on control and response, and it suits kitesurfers who want maximum performance from their sessions.
