Foilboards at Kitemana
A foilboard is the foundation of your foil setup—the part that lets you glide above the water. Together with the mast and wing components, the foilboard helps you plane easily, even in light wind. There are many different shapes and sizes of foilboards, from compact race boards to larger beginner models. Each type offers its own characteristics: shorter boards are agile and responsive, while longer boards provide more stability when taking off. In the section below, we’ll explain what to consider when choosing the right foilboard, such as volume, construction, and mounting system. Whether you’re learning to foil for the first time or upgrading your quiver, with the right board every session feels lighter, smoother, and more effortless—that’s what makes kite foiling so addictive.
Is every kite foilboard compatible with every hydrofoil?
Not always—compatibility mainly depends on the mounting system of both the foil and the board. Most modern kite foilboards use a track mount (rail) or plate mount, while some older models feature a Tuttle box or brand-specific system. Always check if the mast connection of your hydrofoil matches that of your board. If you buy both your board and foil from the same brand and season (such as Duotone, F-One, or Cabrinha), you can be almost certain they’ll fit perfectly. Brands like Appletree, which specialize in foilboards, often list recommended foils that best match their boards in terms of shape, lift, and balance. Also, make sure your foil style suits your board type (freeride, surf, or race) to ensure your setup performs optimally on the water. Still not 100% sure? What are the advantages of a foil kiteboard with volume vs. a twintip sandwich construction?
Whether you prefer a kite hydrofoil board with or without volume mainly comes down to personal preference and experience. A foil kiteboard with volume offers more buoyancy, making it ideal for beginners. During a touchdown, a board with volume won’t dive as easily and feels softer on impact. It’s also more visible on the water in case you lose it during a crash. However, a board with volume is generally more fragile and prone to damage. This is where a twintip sandwich-style hydrofoil board has an advantage—it’s much more durable, especially for traveling and transport. A sandwich foilboard can also be edged more easily during water starts, which makes it a great choice for beginners learning to foil.
What size should my kite foilboard be?
As with all other kite disciplines, your experience level determines the ideal board size. If you’re just starting out with kite foiling, a larger board with more volume is a great choice. It offers more buoyancy, gives you more time to get on the foil, and feels safer and more stable when planing. A larger foil kiteboard also performs better in light wind, making it easier to get up and ride with less power. Experienced foilers who are already carving and attempting jibes usually prefer smaller boards. The smaller the hydrofoil board, the more responsive, dynamic, and playful it becomes, thanks to its lower swing weight.
