Most Frequently Asked Questions about Kiteboard Fins:
Which fins fit my kiteboard or surfboard?
The fins that fit your kiteboard or surfboard mainly depend on the mounting system and the type of board you use. Most twin tips use standard M6 screws with a 5 cm spacing, which fits almost all twin tips. Always check the screw length, screws that are too long can damage your board, while screws that are too short won’t hold the fin securely.

For surfboards, it’s a bit different: you’ll find systems like Futures, FCS I, or FCS II fin boxes. Each has its own fin base and is not cross-compatible. Some foilboards or directional kitesurfboards even use US Box or Slot Box systems, similar to windsurf setups. Not sure which system your board has? Take a look at the fin box or send us a photo of the connection ,our team will help you find fins that perfectly fit your setup and riding style.

Fin size also has a big impact on how your board feels on the water. Shorter fins make your setup looser and more playful, ideal for freestyle or small waves. Longer fins offer more grip, control, and upwind performance, which is great for high speed or strong wind. Unsure which length or connection fits your board best? We’ll gladly help you choose the right fins for your board and riding style.

What materials are fins made from?
Fins are made from a variety of materials, each with its own advantages. The most common are G10, fiberglass, carbon, and composite. G10 is a super-strong laminated fiberglass material often used in high-performance kiteboards. It’s stiff, durable, and provides excellent grip even at high speeds. Fiberglass fins are slightly more flexible and forgiving ,great for riders who prefer comfort and smoothness over rigidity. Carbon fins are ultra-light, respond instantly to steering input, and offer maximum precision, though they tend to be more expensive. Composite fins combine different materials, offering a great balance between weight, strength, and price. The choice of material not only affects durability but also the feel of your board on the water. Choose stiff fins for power and speed, flexible fins for playfulness and flow. How do fins affect my upwind performance?
Fins play a major role in how well your board rides upwind. They provide lateral grip, the resistance that prevents your board from sliding sideways when riding against the wind. The larger, stiffer, and straighter the fin, the better your board tracks and holds its line. Fins with a more vertical outline (less curve) create more downward pressure, offering more stability and control in strong wind or at high speed.

Smaller or more flexible fins provide a looser, more playful feel but reduce upwind performance slightly. This can be ideal for freestyle or wave riding, where maneuverability is more important than pure upwind ability. The angle and position of your fins also affect grip: fins placed further out on the board provide more stability, while smaller fins closer to the center make turning smoother.

With innovative designs like OrcaFins, these traditional rules don’t always apply. Thanks to their aerodynamic shape and flex profile, these fins generate more lift and efficiency, allowing shorter fins to perform exceptionally well upwind. Less drag, more speed, and a smoother ride on the water.
