Kitesurfing Spots in Germany

There are around 30 serious kitespots between Fehmarn and St. Peter-Ording. The Baltic side gives you tide-free flatwater and standing-depth spots, the North Sea gives you space, tides and real waves. Pick the spot that matches your level and the forecast.

Kitespot Laboe und Schöneberg

Kitesurfing in Laboe means a huge standing-depth lagoon in front of the naval memorial, knee to hip deep, with the ferries of the Kiel Fjord sliding past behind you. A few kilometres east lies Schönberger Strand, with groynes and short Baltic chop. The two spots face different directions. When one is offshore, the other usually works side-shore.

Kitespot Cuxhaven

Kitesurfing in Cuxhaven-Sahlenburg happens on waist-deep tidal flats at the mouth of the Elbe, usually more relaxed than St. Peter-Ording. The area switches between flat water and chop, which suits everyone from beginner to advanced. Everything here runs on the tide: roughly three hours before to three hours after high tide.

Kitespot Büsum

Kitesurfing in BĂĽsum means the Perlebucht: a closed-off lagoon with mirror-flat water at any wind strength, roughly 300 metres long and 150 wide. In front of it lies a huge waist-deep area in the North Sea where beginners learn safely. For the lagoon itself, though, you need VDWS Level 5.

Kitespot Sylt

Kitesurfing on Sylt means this: it is the only spot on the German coast where you can more or less pick your wind direction. At its narrowest point the island is just a few hundred metres wide, so you switch sides instead of writing off the day. Then there is the range on offer: knee-deep standing water in the north, a shallow lagoon in the south, proper North Sea waves in the west.

Kitespot St. Peter-Ording

Kitesurfing in St. Peter-Ording works for every level. Flat water builds over the sandbanks as the tide comes in, a real wave runs in front of Ording in a southwesterly, and the beach is wide enough that nobody gets in anyone's way. You stick to the marked kite zones and plan around high tide. Here is how it works.
