Kitesurfing in GroĂźenbrode works in east and southeast winds. You choose between the GroĂźenbrode Ost lagoon, with flat but deep water, and SĂĽdstrand, the south beach, with chop and waves on the open sea. In northeast winds, stay away. The spot suits intermediate and advanced riders, and there is no kite school on site.

Lagoon or open sea: two spots for easterlies
GroĂźenbrode has two spots, and both work in the same wind: east and southeast. Which one you pick depends on what you want to ride.
In the lagoon the water is flat. You still cannot stand, because it is too deep. If you want smooth water for practising tricks or just putting in the miles, this is your place.
SĂĽdstrand is for everyone who would rather head out to sea than stay in the lagoon. Expect chop, and on good days some proper waves.
| GroĂźenbrode Ost lagoon | Flat water, but deep, so no standing. Works in east and southeast winds. The launch area is very small and surrounded by stones. |
| SĂĽdstrand | Open sea, choppy to wavy. Works in east and southeast winds. There are groynes in the water. |
GroĂźenbrode Ost lagoon: smooth water, but nothing under your feet.
Why northeast does not work here
When the wind swings northeast, GroĂźenbrode gets gusty. The direction simply does not suit the spot. Skip the session here and drive over to Fehmarn instead. GrĂĽner Brink on Fehmarn works from east round to west, so northeast is covered. Across the Fehmarnsund Bridge it is only a short detour.
Stones and groynes
Both spots have one thing you need to watch.
In the lagoon the launch area is very small and ringed by stones. Only launch and land here if you have your kite fully under control. One mistake on launch and you end up on the rocks. Neoprene shoes are a good idea too.
At SĂĽdstrand there are groynes in the water. Take a look at them from the beach before you go out, and keep your distance while riding.
Learning to kite and kite zones
GroĂźenbrode is not a place to learn. There is no kite school on site, the lagoon is too deep to stand and the launch leaves no room for mistakes. Head to Fehmarn for that. The standing-depth spot at Gold also works in easterlies, and there are several kite schools on the island.
In summer, keep clear of the swimming areas. Where you are allowed to launch and ride can change with the season, so ask locally before your first session.
Frequently asked questions about kitesurfing in GroĂźenbrode
Can you learn to kitesurf in GroĂźenbrode?
Not really. There is no kite school on site, the lagoon is deep and the launch area is small. To learn, go to Fehmarn and the standing-depth water at Gold.
Which wind works for kiting in GroĂźenbrode?
East and southeast, both in the lagoon and at SĂĽdstrand. In northeast winds it gets gusty, and GrĂĽner Brink on Fehmarn is the better choice.
Where are you allowed to kite in GroĂźenbrode?
In the GroĂźenbrode Ost lagoon and at SĂĽdstrand, outside the swimming areas. Ask locally where exactly you can launch.
GroĂźenbrode or Fehmarn in an easterly?
GroĂźenbrode if you ride confidently and want flat water in the lagoon or chop on the open sea. On Fehmarn, Wulfen and Gold both work in easterlies, and Gold is the better pick for beginners.
