Kitesurfing on Fehmarn works in almost any wind direction, because the island has spots on every side. In west and southwest winds you head to Orth or Gold, in easterlies to Wulfen or Gold again. Grüner Brink on the north coast runs in everything except south. And Gold, with its standing-depth water, is where you learn.

Four spots for almost every wind direction

On Fehmarn you rarely drive home without a session. Check the wind direction in the morning and pick the side of the island that suits it. West and southwest belong to Orth and Gold, east belongs to Wulfen and, again, Gold.

Grüner Brink on the north coast is the all-rounder. It works from east round through north to west.

Orth Fairly flat water, best in west and southwest winds. The rigging area is small, so it gets tight on busy days. To the right of the spot runs the shipping channel, and sailing boats come through regularly. The entry is rocky.
Grüner Brink Choppy to flat water on the north coast. Works from east to west, just not in a southerly. The neighbouring nature reserve is off limits.
Gold Standing-depth water and the island's beginner spot. Works in west and southwest winds, and almost as well in easterlies.
Wulfen Flat to choppy water, good in an easterly.

Grüner Brink: works from east to west, the nature reserve next door stays off limits.

Local tip for Orth: Wear neoprene shoes, the entry is rocky. And keep your distance from the shipping channel on the right as you ride out. The sailors there are not looking out for you, and they cannot change course as quickly as you can.

Water level, not tides

You will not need a tide table on Fehmarn, because the Baltic has practically no tide. The wind sets the water level instead. When it blows from one direction for a while, the water rises or drops noticeably. You feel it first in the shallow water at Gold. If the level is low, bring your short fins.

Kite zones and nature reserves

In summer the beaches have marked swimming areas, and the kite zone gets smaller. At Grüner Brink there is a nature reserve right next to the spot. It stays off limits, even when nobody else is on the water. The rules change with the season, so ask the kite schools on the island where you can launch and ride before your first session.

Learning to kitesurf and getting there

If you are learning, go to Gold. In standing-depth water you just get back on your feet after every crash, and you do not need a water start straight away. Because Gold works in west, southwest and east winds, you also lose few lesson days. There are several kite schools on the island.

You reach Fehmarn via the A1 motorway and the Fehmarnsund Bridge. Distances on the island are short, so when the wind turns, you simply switch spots.
