Kitesurfing Punta Trettu: Sardinia spot guide

Written by Loek

Aerial view of Punta Trettu: kites rigged on the sandbank and riders on the shallow lagoon

Kitesurfing at Punta Trettu means riding flat, shallow water on a lagoon in south-west Sardinia, opposite the island of Sant'Antioco. You can stand for hundreds of metres, the bottom is sand and the Mistral blows most reliably from June to August. It is one of the easiest places in Europe to learn, and a good freestyle playground once you can ride.

Bar: typical wind range, top = upper limit, dotted line = lower limit *Built from local kite schools: summer thermal 15–25 knots almost daily, 12–30 knots on most days from April to November, Mistral and thermal stronger in July and August. To be confirmed by a local.

June, July and August are the safest bet. In southern Sardinia around nine out of ten days in July and August bring more than 11 knots, and the Mistral is the dominant wind from April to September.

Spring and autumn are a good trade-off. March, April, September and October still give wind on most days, and the water is quieter. You will want a full wetsuit then: the water sits around 15 to 16 °C in spring.

Winter is possible but less predictable. January and February still have plenty of windy days, but it is colder and rains more often. November and December are the least windy months.

Water temperature runs from about 14 °C in February to 26 °C in August. In summer a shorty is enough; from October to May bring a full suit.

Schematic, not to scale. Based on the local kite zone map; marker buoys on site take priority.

Punta Trettu is a lagoon almost closed off by land. A channel connects it to the open sea, which is why the water stays flat even when it blows hard. The bottom is sand and the shallow part runs out for hundreds of metres, so a beginner who drops the board can simply walk back to it.

The rules are enforced. You may only launch from Punta Trettu Kite Beach and ride in the two marked kite zones. The school zone is reserved for lessons and has the shallowest water. The riders zone is for independent kiters; the water there is not always shallow, so it suits riders who can already go upwind.

Stay out of the boat channel to Sant'Antioco harbour, the fishing zones where nets are set, and the beach in front of the harbour. The police and the Coast Guard do give fines.

You park at the Punta Trettu car park and walk about 10 minutes to the kite beach. Bring a trolley or pack light if you carry two kites and a board.

When the wind doesn't suit Punta Trettu

The south-west has other spots within a short drive, each for a different wind or level:

  • Porto Botte: a little further south. Works when the Mistral blows side-onshore, with choppier water for more experienced riders.
  • Sant'Antioco: the island across the channel has expert spots with stronger wind and rougher water.
  • Funtanamare: a wave spot, for when you want waves instead of flat water.
  • Cagliari area: about an hour away, with Poetto Beach and Petrol Beach.

Accommodation and kite schools

Several kite schools work from the beach, with courses for complete beginners up to advanced riders, plus gear rental. Because the school zone is shallow and flat, this is one of the best places to take your first lessons: you spend your time riding, not swimming after your board.

If you want lessons, gear and a place to stay arranged in one go, our partner at Punta Trettu is ProKite Sardegna, with its base right on the spot.

Kite school and stay: ProKite Sardegna

An official Core Kites school with its base directly on the Punta Trettu spot. It was founded by Giacomo Barberi, pro rider since 2007 and Italian freestyle champion in 2011, who also shapes the teaching method. IKO and FIV certified instructors teach every level, from first lessons to freestyle coaching, plus courses for children and wing foil. Lessons use radio helmets, and a lifeguard with a rescue boat covers the spot.

Around the lessons: Core rental gear, a bar overlooking the lagoon, hot showers and toilets, Starlink wifi and free parking, including daytime parking for students' campers and vans. They also offer a selection of apartments and houses near Punta Trettu, picked by kiters for kiters.

Wind and kites

WIND AND KITES

Reading the wind rose with the Windfinder forecast for Punta Trettu
  • Start with the direction. The dark segments show the ideal wind for this spot. Check that the arrow in the forecast comes from one of them before you look at the knots.
  • Add 5 to 10 knots on Mistral days. The local thermal often blows harder than Windfinder predicts.
  • North-west is the best direction. The Mistral is steady here rather than gusty.
  • South-east, east, west and south-west work only when strong. Check the forecast strength, not just the direction.
  • If in doubt, rig the smaller kite first, and ask at the beach before you launch.

The Mistral from the north-west is the wind Punta Trettu is known for. It blows steady here rather than gusty, which is a big part of why schools like the spot. The Scirocco from the south-east comes in through the Sant'Antioco channel and works well when it blows hard. Levante (east), west and south-west winds can work too, but only when they are strong.

Which sizes to bring depends on your weight and level; with the summer thermal most riders get by with a mid-size kite plus a smaller one for Mistral days. On flat water a twintip with a bit of float makes the light days easier.

Getting there

Fly into Cagliari. From the city it is about 85 km to Punta Trettu: take the SS130 towards Carbonia, then follow the signs for Matzaccara and on to the spot. Count on a little over an hour.

Rent a car. You need it to get to the beach, and in Sardinia the wind changes direction often, so having wheels means you can chase it to another spot.

WHICH AIRPORT TO FLY INTO
AirportWhereTo the spot
Cagliari (CAG)South coastAbout 85 km, a little over an hour by car
Olbia (OLB)North-east coastLong drive, about 3.5–4 hours; only worth it if you also visit Porto Pollo
Alghero (AHO)North-west coastLong drive, [check]

Direct routes depend on where you fly from and change every season: check with the airlines before you book.

Cagliari has fewer direct flights than Olbia, and many run in summer only, so book early. Coming with your van? The Sardinia overview lists the ferry routes.

No-wind days

Cross over to Sant'Antioco for the old town and beaches such as Cala Maladroxia, or paddle the lagoon on a SUP. Matzaccara, the nearest village, has a mini-market and a pharmacy; for bigger shops and restaurants go to San Giovanni Suergiu, Carbonia or Sant'Antioco.

Frequently asked questions

Is Punta Trettu good for beginners?

Yes. The water is flat and shallow with a sandy bottom, so you can stand up and walk back after a fall. Lessons take place in a separate school zone, away from independent riders.

What is the best month to kitesurf at Punta Trettu?

June, July and August have the most windy days. Spring and autumn also work well with fewer people on the water, but you need a full wetsuit.

Can I kite anywhere at Punta Trettu?

No. You may only launch from Punta Trettu Kite Beach and ride in the two marked kite zones. The boat channel, the fishing zones and the beach in front of the harbour are off-limits, and fines are given.

How far is Punta Trettu from Cagliari?

About 85 km, a little over an hour by car via the SS130 towards Carbonia.

Do I need a wetsuit in summer?

From June to September the water is around 23 to 26 °C, so a shorty is enough for most riders. From October to May bring a full wetsuit.
