What is powerkiting?

Powerkiting is essentially just kite flying but powered. This means the wind generates force that you can really feel in your arms! Powerkiting is usually done in open spaces like the beach, where there’s enough room and the wind can hit the kite directly. The wind fills the kite with air, giving it its shape. So you don’t need to pump up a powerkite. The advantage? It’s super lightweight and works well even with very little wind. The more wind there is, the more power the kite will generate. So be a bit cautious when the wind is strong. For beginners, we recommend starting in winds of around 2 to 4 Beaufort before braving a serious storm.

Most powerkites are controlled with two lines. These lines carry all the force. Some powerkites have four lines. In that case, there’s a difference between power lines and steering lines: the power goes through the power lines, and you control the kite with the steering lines. There are two ways to control your kite: using a bar (control stick) or two handles. We usually recommend a bar, as it gives you a bit more control and helps you get used to the feel of a bar which is useful if you plan to switch to kitesurfing later on.

What should I pay attention to when buying a powerkite?

When buying a powerkite, a few factors are important. The size of the kite mainly determines how much power it generates. Consider the following variables: body weight, skill level, type of powerkite, wind strength, and wind direction. If you plan to kite often in light wind, you’ll need a slightly larger powerkite. Prefer kiting in stronger winds? Then go for a smaller one. Check the overview below to get a good estimate of the right powerkite size for your weight.

  • 30 – 40 kg 1,0 – 1,2 m²
  • 40 – 50 kg 1,2 – 1,5 m²
  • 50 – 60 kg 1,5 – 2,0 m²
  • 60 – 70 kg 2,0 – 2,5 m²
  • 70 – 80 kg 2,5 – 3,0 m²
  • 80 – 90 kg 3,0 – 3,5 m²
  • 90 – 100 kg 3,5 – 4,0 m²
  • 100 – 110 kg 4,0 – 4,5 m²

What is the difference between a tube kite and a powerkite?

Of course, there are many different types of kites on the market. To keep things simple, we distinguish between tube kites and foil kites. Tube kites, which are commonly used in kitesurfing, get their shape by being inflated. When you pump air into the tubes, the kite forms its structure and gains stability. One big advantage of tube kites is that they float on water like an air mattress. This makes relaunching super easy, which adds a lot of safety when kiting on the water. A downside of tube kites is that they tend to be a bit heavier. Foil kites, or powerkites, don’t need to be inflated, they fill up with wind as it flows into the kite.

How do you control a powerkite?

You control a powerkite by shortening one line relative to the other. This changes the kite's direction. Make sure to pull only one side of the bar instead of twisting it. At the same time, gently push the other side away from you. So, if you want to steer left, pull your left hand in and slightly release your right hand. Just make sure to steer the kite back in time otherwise it might start looping! :) Thinking about giving powerkiting a try but prefer to take a lesson first? No problem! Kitemana has its own powerkite school. Want to know more about powerkites or kite flying? Feel free to call or email us for no-obligation advice.
