Kitespot Föhr: Wyk, Nieblum und Utersum

Written by John, kiter on Föhr and part of the Kitemana crew

Kitesurfing on Föhr means planning around the tide. The island has three spots: Nieblum and Wyk Südstrand are standing-depth flats that work around high water, and Utersum on the west tip rides at every tide but has strong current and an oyster belt. Beginners belong at Nieblum and Wyk.

Which kite spot on Föhr suits you?

Nieblum and Wyk Südstrand suit beginners and intermediates. Utersum suits experts, or anyone else who goes out with the local kite school. That split comes down to water depth and current, not wind.

Föhr sits in the Wadden Sea behind Sylt and Amrum. The outer islands take the North Sea swell, so you get flat water and chop here, never surf. What decides your session is the tide, which is why on Föhr you read the tide table before the wind forecast.

If you are comparing Föhr with the rest of the coast, our overview of kitesurfing spots in Germany puts it next to Sylt and St. Peter-Ording.

Nieblum: the standing-depth spot for practising

Nieblum is the best spot on Föhr to practise, because the standing-depth area is huge while the tide is in. In westerly wind it rides from two hours before to two hours after high water. In easterly wind you get one hour either side. Falling off costs you nothing but a walk back to your board.

The base is the Nieblum water sports school (NWS), right on the beach. The current at Nieblum is weaker than at the other two spots. Lessons, rental and a wide standing area in one place make Nieblum the spot to learn to ride upwind or work on a new transition. North wind is the one direction that does not work here, because it blows offshore.

Wyk Südstrand: flat water in the ferry town

Wyk Südstrand works like Nieblum: standing depth for two hours either side of high water in westerly wind, one hour in easterly wind. It is the easiest spot on Föhr to reach, because the ferry from Dagebüll docks in Wyk. You can be on the water the afternoon you arrive.

Two stations sit on this stretch of beach: Windsurfing Föhr at Pitschi’s and Schapers. Both offer lessons and rental. In summer the beach is busy, so rig where you have room downwind and keep clear of swimmers.

Utersum: current and oysters on the west tip

Utersum is the only spot on Föhr that rides at every tide, and the one that needs the most respect. Experts can ride it on their own. If you are a beginner or intermediate, ride Utersum only with the local kite school, Westend. Depending on the tide you find standing depth or deep water, and if you do not know the spot, that is hard to time.

At low tide a channel forms right off the beach. It is flat and fast, but the current in it is strong, so low tide at Utersum is an expert-only session. Before you launch, think about where the current would take you if you had to self-rescue. Never ride here alone.

Utersum from above at low tide. The dark patches are the oyster belt, the green water next to the beach is the channel. Ask at the station where the belt runs now.

The real danger at Utersum is the oyster belt. Depending on the tide you see it or you do not, and a fall on oyster shells cuts feet and neoprene. Ask the Westend crew where it runs before your first session, and wear booties.

Before your first session at Utersum
  • Ask at Westend. Where the oyster belt runs and what the current is doing today.
  • Check the tide. It decides whether you stand or swim, and how hard the current pulls.
  • Wear booties. Oyster shells cut.
  • Ride with someone. Utersum is no place to be alone on the water.

Wind, tides and water temperature on Föhr

Föhr is windy all year round, with more than 250 kiteable days. There is no real off-season here, only colder water. Whatever month you pick, check the tide table for Wyk before you plan a session: high water decides whether you ride the flats at Nieblum and Wyk or nothing at all.

Local wind: Windy all year, with 250+ kiteable days. On sunny days with an easterly wind, the thermal adds about 5 knots around midday. Windfinder is usually quite accurate for Föhr. Work out your kite size here.

The water reaches up to 20 °C from June to August. The rest of the year the North Sea is cold, and you want a 5 or 6 mm wetsuit, usually with booties. Not sure which thickness you need? Our wetsuit guide explains it.

Getting to Föhr with kite gear

You get to Föhr on the ferry from Dagebüll to Wyk. From the harbour it is only a short drive to Wyk Südstrand. With kite gear the car is the easy option. In summer and at weekends the car deck fills up, so book your crossing ahead. Parking is free all around the island.

Timetables and fares change every year. Check them with the ferry operator before you book.

Gear for kitesurfing on Föhr

On Föhr you need gear for flat, shallow water, plus cold-water neoprene for most of the year. A twintip covers all three spots. Booties matter more here than at most German spots, because of the oyster belt at Utersum, and if you ride Utersum you want something that keeps you afloat in deep water.

Rent hereAll four stations on the island rent gear: Westend in Utersum, NWS in Nieblum, and Schapers and Windsurfing Föhr in Wyk. Westend has the latest Core Kiteboarding gear, NWS rides Flysurfer. All four also rent wetsuits and booties, so you are covered on cold days. Worth it if you come over as a foot passenger or want to try a size first

Kite zones and nature protection on Föhr

Kitesurfing on Föhr is only allowed in the designated zones, because the waters around the island belong to the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. The north side of the island is a protected area and off limits for kiting. Keep clear of the swimming zones in summer and of the seal and bird protection areas.

The information boards at each spot are more current than any article, so read them before your first session. If you are unsure where a zone starts or ends, ask at the station on the beach.

Kite schools and rental on Föhr

Föhr has four stations for kite lessons and rental, one or two at each spot. Beginners learn at Nieblum or Wyk Südstrand, inside the high-water window. Leave Utersum until you can ride upwind reliably and self-rescue in deep water, or go out there with Westend.

Frequently asked questions

Is Föhr good for learning to kitesurf?

Yes, as long as you book your lessons around high water. Nieblum and Wyk Südstrand have wide standing-depth areas inside the tide window, and both have a school on the beach. Utersum is not a beginner spot because of the strong current and the oyster belt.

When is the best tide for kitesurfing on Föhr?

At Nieblum and Wyk Südstrand, ride from two hours before to two hours after high water in westerly wind, and one hour either side in easterly wind. Utersum works at every tide, but low tide there is for experts only.

Can you kitesurf on Föhr at low tide?

Only at Utersum, and only as an expert. At low tide a channel forms off the beach at Utersum with a strong current, and the oyster belt lies close by. Nieblum and Wyk Südstrand do not have enough water at low tide.

Is Föhr or Sylt better for kitesurfing?

Sylt has more variety, including real North Sea waves on the west side. Föhr sits behind Sylt and Amrum, so it has no surf, but the standing-depth flats at Nieblum and Wyk Südstrand are quieter and good for practising.

How do I get to Föhr with my kite gear?

Take the car ferry from Dagebüll to Wyk. The ferry docks in Wyk, a short drive from Wyk Südstrand, one of the three kite spots on Föhr. Book the car crossing ahead in summer and at weekends.
