How much neoprene do you actually need? For most kitesurfers in cold-water regions, 5/4mm is the thickness that gets you through the biggest part of the cold season. The Prolimit Mercury 5/4 Free-X Frontzip 2027 Wetsuit takes that thickness and makes it surprisingly flexible. The Free-X frontzip from Prolimit runs across your chest instead of your back, so there is no zipper in the way when you unhook, pull your bar in or look over your shoulder at the next bump.
That flexibility comes mainly from the new Quad Flex outer lining combined with the Neolight heather 550+ fabric. Quad Flex stretches in every direction, while the woven grid structure keeps the material from going baggy in the spots you pull on hardest. You notice it when you raise your arms above your head: the wetsuit follows you instead of fighting back. Another bonus is that the fabric dries fast, so for a double session you are not stepping into an ice cold wet rag.
You stay warm thanks to the 4-layer build with Thermal Rebound2. Between the NaturePrene2 and the Zodiac2 inner lining sits a reflective layer that holds on to your body heat and blocks windchill. The Zodiac2 plush on the inside is a quick drying thermal fleece that absorbs moisture from your skin and releases it again fast. Nice side effect: that smooth inside makes getting the suit on a lot less of a battle.
The finishing is what you benefit from most in the long run. All seams are triple glued with water-based Aqua Alpha glue, blind stitched and sealed on the outside with a wide carbon neoprene tape using the Fluid Taping Method. Those seams stay stretchy and keep water out, session after session. The KED knee construction protects without pinching, and the drainholes and ankle straps at the bottom do their job whenever water does find a way in.
