The ‘best kite’ for you will be the one, that allows you to have the most fun out on the water. Depending on your favourite kitesurf discipline, riding style, skill level, weight and home spot the ideal kite for you will probably change several times throughout your kite life.

The flight characteristics of these kites have been optimized for riding styles and needs of each kitesurf discipline.

Freeride Kites are often great allrounders, comfortable to ride and easy to jump with.
Freestyle Kites are responsive and have a lot of drift and slack for unhooked freestyle tricks.
Wave Kites are fast and have a light bar pressure, a lot of depower and great drifting abilities.
Lightwind Kites have a lightweight construction and are very efficient in generating power.
Big Air Kites have a higher bar pressure, are very powerful and offer a huge amount of lift and hangtime.

To start off, obviously one kite is enough to hit the water. However, it makes sense to have at least two kites to be able to cover a wider wind range. For most riders, a full range consists of three kites. However, if you cross over into other disciplines, you might want to get specialized kite(s) for foiling or freestyle as well – there is no such thing as too many toys!

This depends on the size of your quiver (number of kites you already own, or you are planning to purchase), as well as your own body weight and size, home spot, favourite style and discipline. Most riders get two-three kites: a smaller kite for strong winds and storms, one kite for the average wind speeds at your home spot and one kite for light wind sessions.

All-round/ Freeride kites and wave kites tend to be more suitable for beginners, as they often fulfill the four important requirements every beginner kite should always meet:
