How has Naish grown into a leading kiteboarding brand since 1979?

Naish started in 1979 as a family business in a garage in Hawaii and grew into one of the original names in kiteboarding. That growth revolves around one man: Robby Naish. As a windsurfer he was the best of his generation, and in the late 90s he was one of the first to embrace kitesurfing. He developed his own line of kites and won world titles himself in the sport's early years. For you as a kiter, that means choosing a brand that has been part of the sport from the very start and has refined every generation of kites since.

It all starts in Kailua on O'ahu, where the Naish family moved from California. Father Rick was a surfer, lifeguard, teacher and shaper, so Robby grew up in a true watersports family. In 1976, aged 13, he won his first windsurfing world title in the Bahamas. Three years later, in 1979, his parents started Naish Hawaii in their garage. Robby tinkered with his own gear from an early age and contributed to innovations such as footstraps and the window in the windsurf sail. That drive to keep improving the gear has never left the brand. When Robby stepped away from the world tour in the mid-90s, he founded Naish Sails Hawaii, and the company began producing high-performance windsurf gear and, later, kite gear.

In the late 90s, the emerging sport of kiteboarding caught Robby's attention and he started on his own line of kites. He also threw himself into competition: in 1998 he became kiteboarding slalom world champion, and in 1999 he took the world titles in both slalom and jumping. That made Robby not just the face of the brand, but also one of the best kiters of his time. In 2000 Naish won the ISPO Brandnew Award, which Robby describes as a decisive moment for the brand's international success. One well-known kite followed another: from the first two-line kites through the market-leading AR series, the Boxer and the Sigma, to the Torch, the C-kite that Kevin Langeree and others rode for big air for years, and the Pivot, a versatile kite that feels at home everywhere from waves to flat water.

Naish has always had a special connection with the Netherlands, the home of Kitemana. For years it was a favourite among Dutch kiters, and top riders Kevin and Jalou Langeree rode for the brand for a long time. On top of that, Dutch company Kubus Sports was Naish's European distribution partner for more than twenty years. In January 2023 that partnership became an acquisition, and Kubus became the owner of the brand. According to Robby, Naish needed a new direction, a new structure and new energy to reach its full potential. He stayed on as an ambassador and remained involved in product innovation. He explains why he took that step in the Hangtime Podcast with Ruben Lenten at the bottom of this page.

With the 2026 collection, Naish builds on that history: new materials, refined outlines and improved construction across the board, including new versions of the Pivot and the Monarch twin tip. Besides kites and kiteboards, the brand makes surfboards, foils and windsurf gear, and Robby was also a pioneer in stand-up paddling. Who is Robby Naish and which team riders kite for Naish?

Robby Naish is the namesake and face of Naish, and with 24 windsurfing world titles and around 150 event wins, he is one of the most successful watersports athletes of all time. Around him stands an international team covering big air, park, freestyle and wave, including Dutch rider Stig Hoefnagel, Germany's Alessa Mensch and Scotland's Ewan Jaspan. Naish riders have won Red Bull King of the Air four times, and today's team is still collecting world titles and podiums.

After his first title as a teenager, Robby dominated the windsurfing world. He was overall world champion every year from 1983 to 1987, followed by PWA world titles in 1988, 1989 and 1991. He also became a figurehead in kiteboarding: in 2000 he was named Kiteboarder of the Year at the International Sports Awards in Munich. The recognition kept coming. Robby was inducted into the PWA Hall of Fame (2002), the US National Sailing Hall of Fame (2017), the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame (2019) and the Windsurfing Hall of Fame (2021), and he is a founding member of the Laureus World Sports Academy. He is also a man of big moments. In 1995 he windsurfed Jaws, the notorious big-wave spot on Maui, for the first time, and later he travelled the world in search of the longest waves. You can follow that journey in the documentary The Longest Wave (2021).

The team riders made history too, especially at Red Bull King of the Air in Cape Town, the most prestigious big air event in kiteboarding. Jesse Richman won in 2013 on the Torch, then the go-to kite for radical big air. A year later, Kevin Langeree did the same. Kevin then switched to the Pivot and won again in 2018 and 2019, becoming the first rider ever to be crowned King of the Air three times. Jalou Langeree became GKA Kite-Surf World Champion on the Pivot in 2018, her third world title.

The new team builds on that legacy. Stig Hoefnagel has been riding for Naish for more than ten years and finished third on his King of the Air debut in 2021, on a 9m Pivot. The Pivot is still his all-rounder, and for the most extreme conditions he grabs the Psycho. Germany's Alessa Mensch became vice world champion at the 2026 GKA Big Air World Championship on the Pivot NVision, and South African Jason van der Spuy finished fourth at King of the Air in 2023. Naish is strong in the park as well. Ewan Jaspan won the first official GKA world title in the Kite Park League in 2024 and is now head of kite design at Naish, with the Traverse EJ as his own pro model. Australian Katie Potter won the Kite Park League in 2023 and 2024, and Louka Pitot from Mauritius, a two-time junior world champion, rides freestyle and wave.

Naish riders are also known for stunts you won't forget, often with Jesse Richman in the lead role. In 2013 he was towed by boat to 241 metres (790 ft) above the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, then flew back down on his kite. On 9 December 2015 he made history at Jaws, the same big-wave spot where Robby had first windsurfed twenty years earlier. On his Pivot, Jesse became the first kitesurfer ever to get barrelled there, with Robby Naish and Kai Lenny the only others on the water. And at Kitefest 2016 in Argentina, he jumped more than 50 metres (170 ft) of rocks and spectators on a Torch. Stig Hoefnagel isn't shy of a challenge either: in 2026 he jumped from Misty Cliffs near Cape Town with his kite, after months of preparation. That's when you really need to trust your gear 100%.

Where is Naish designed and made, and how sustainable is the brand?

Naish gear is designed on Maui, Hawaii, and made by specialist production partners in Asia. The headquarters on Maui is the heart of R&D, while Kubus Sports handles distribution, sales and marketing from the Netherlands. At Naish, sustainability is mainly about gear that lasts longer and new construction techniques, such as the adhesive-free, recycle-ready materials in the Nvision line.

New kites and boards take shape on Maui, an island the brand has called home for decades and where Ho'okipa was Robby's daily training spot for years. The team also has bases in Hood River, Oregon, and in Cape Town, two of the best-known wind spots in the world. That way, Naish develops its gear close to the conditions it's built for: from strong trade winds and waves to heavy big air days in South Africa.

Kubus Sports is based in Nijkerk, the Netherlands, and has owned and distributed premium sports brands in more than 60 countries for over 55 years. Besides Naish, its portfolio includes Prolimit and STX, two brands Kubus built up itself. Kubus handles R&D, design and marketing for many products in-house and outsources production to carefully selected manufacturers in Asia. Your kite or board is built by a specialist production partner, based on designs developed on Maui.

When it comes to sustainability, materials are the biggest step. Nvision is Naish's innovation line, combining the best materials with top-end performance. The first Psycho Nvision was built with ALUULA, a composite made without adhesives. According to the manufacturer, most ALUULA fabrics are 100% polyethylene, which makes them recycle-ready. And because there's no glue involved, the material can't delaminate or fray, which makes your kite stronger and longer-lasting. The Psycho Nvision that Naish revealed in September 2026 takes a different direction: a digitally printed kite with welded seams, built for precision and fast steering. Curious about kites built with these high-end materials? Check out the Aluula kites.

The most sustainable kite is the one you keep using. A torn canopy or a worn bladder doesn't have to mean the end of your kite. With the right kite spare parts, you can often get it back on the water.
